Living in Today: Because Tomorrow Isn’t Promised

Hey sweet friend,

Let’s talk about something real today—how we live like we can see the future, like we hold time in our hands. But newsflash: we don’t.

I was reading James 4 the other day, and this verse hit me like a ton of bricks:

“Now listen, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.’ Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.” —James 4:13-14 (NIV)

We are not promised tomorrow.

Yet, we fill our planners and phones with schedules and events like we’ve got endless time. We say things like “next week I’ll…” or “in five years I’ll…” without a second thought. Dreaming and planning isn’t wrong—in fact, it’s wise when we keep God in the center of it. But when we get so wrapped up in the “what ifs” and “what’s next” that we forget the right now—that’s where we lose sight of God’s goodness in the present.

Here’s the truth: Worrying about tomorrow steals the joy of today.

We spend so much of today worrying about what might happen. Whether it’s stressing over school, college, friendships, the future—our thoughts spiral. But God never asked us to carry that weight alone. In fact, He said don’t.

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” —Matthew 6:34

Oof. Jesus was direct on that one.

Think about it like this—every single day we wake up is a gift. It’s not owed to us. God, in His mercy and love, gives us today. And sometimes we waste it wishing we were somewhere else in life or fearing where we’re headed.

But sis, we’re missing the beauty right in front of us.

So, what if we started treating each day like the precious gift it really is? What if we slowed down and stopped making promises to tomorrow, and instead said, “God, thank You for today—help me to live it well”?

Because living well doesn’t mean having it all figured out. It means living present, loving people well, and trusting God with the parts we don’t see yet.

Let’s be girls who stop trying to write the future like it’s ours to write. Let’s be girls who surrender our calendars, our dreams, and our fears into the hands of the One who holds eternity.

Because the truth is: We are not promised tomorrow. But we are deeply loved today.

And that’s more than enough.

With love and grace,

A Prayer for Living in Today

Dear Jesus,

Thank You for the gift of today. Sometimes I get so caught up in what’s next that I forget how precious this very moment is. Forgive me for the times I’ve worried about things that haven’t even happened yet, or made plans without including You. Help me to trust You more, to let go of fear, and to live fully present in the now. Teach me to make the most of every day You’ve given me—not out of fear, but out of faith and love for You. Remind me that even if tomorrow never comes, I’m safe in Your hands today. I surrender my future to You, Lord.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
